Equal opportunities policy

What’s an equal opportunities policy and when do you need it?

 

You must have one of these policies in place for your employees and workers.

It should apply to all your employees, apprentices, consultants, officers, contractors, interns, volunteers, job applicants, agency and casual workers.

The policy makes clear that you do not tolerate discrimination or harassment in any part of your operations and that you are fully committed to promoting equal opportunities in employment.

It addresses how you treat those who work for and with you and how you recruit or engage others to join that community.

It covers, for example, recruitment processes, pay and employment conditions, appraisals and promotion opportunities, training, how employee complaints, grievances and disciplinary matters will be handled, etc.

We recommend that you do not give the policy contractual status in any employment contract that you put in place, but that you do reference it in that contract, make clear that the employee is expected to comply with the policy and that you have the right to update or revise it, in your discretion and when you want to.
