Content Licence

What is a content licence and when should you use it?

You probably see it more often than you realize — a company has won an award and uses a badge or logo to show it off online or in a commercial on television.

Or a company may display a specific quote about a product or service to promote it.

When a company does this, it is licensing that content (written or visual) from the company who owns it.

The goal of a content licensing agreement is to obtain the rights to distribute or publish someone else’s copyright (or intellectual property).

You can read our guides on copyright and intellectual property to find out more.

These agreements ensure you or another party have legal permission to use the property.

Content created for one company may be useful to another business.

Articles or blog posts picked by your team, for example, might have been created by someone else.

This  content licence should be used when either you are licensing your content to someone else or where someone is licensing their content to you.

It allows the Licensee to use the content on their website, in brochures, promotions etc.
